Today, another anti-gay Republican came out of the closet. That’s right, another supposed conservative who dedicated himself to raging against gay people is, himself, gay. What’s up with that? How can someone deny who they are while, at the same time, doing everything they can to destroy others like them? Talk about a severe case of denial. Is it that these people rage against gays in an effort to try to force themselves out of being gay?
To be clear, I don’t have a concern with anyone being gay. I don’t believe that we, as individuals, choose our sexual orientation. Although genetics may play a role, I believe it is spiritually derived. I think it comes from each of us having a soulmate, a person that we will naturally seek out regardless of sex. No matter what though, gay doesn’t matter to me. What matters to me is who you are and what is in your heart. If you are a good person, you will shine like a Christmas tree on a dark night. Straight or gay, black or white, man or woman, it doesn’t matter. I believe or better yet, I know, God feels the same way.
So why behave this way? Why do people like Craig, Ashburn, and Haggard preach hate against people who are just like them? I don’t understand that. Wouldn’t that be like a group of women saying women shouldn’t have the right to vote? Come on. I believe people should be who they are. I believe people should be loved for who they are, not for who they are not. I know acceptance is a huge part of the human condition. It is hard when people don’t like you. However, ultimately, acceptance is too high a price to pay if it means you can’t be you.
Honestly, I am really tired of hatred. I don’t care if it is hatred toward Christians, Gays, Blacks, or Women. Hatred is hatred and it is plain wrong. What makes me sick is that some people use God as a platform to spread hatred. I’ve heard people say God hates gays. I’ve heard people say God wants women to be subservient to men. That is extremely arrogant. How would they know? They are not God. In my lifetime, I have experienced a very loving God. Although I haven’t seen him, I have felt him. He doesn’t hate me because I am a Christian, because I believe in equal rights for women, because I believe in equal rights for gays, or because I have friends that are gay. He doesn’t hate me. He loves me. That tells me that I am right or at least on the right track.
I believe, as a society, we should change the way we interact with each other. We should respect each other for who we are because it takes an extreme amount of courage to tell others who you are. I admire that. I respect that. I salute that. I wish others felt the same. For if so, we would repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, Women would receive equal pay for equal work, Blacks and Hispanics would have the same opportunities as Whites, and people would be free to worship without ridicule. A utopia? Perhaps. But if we could merely lean toward being true to ourselves, we would be better for it.
