Mr. Cheney, you presided over America’s darkest hours, abused our Armed Forces, desecrated our Constitution, and lead the charge to de-regulate our financial markets which created the worst economic mess since the Great Depression. To watch you on Thursday attempt to defend your record, defend your policies on torture, and claim that your policies made America safer was disgusting. In fact, you have made our country weaker in every way. You have alienated long standing allies, decimated our economy, and contributed to the deaths of thousands of Americans at home and overseas in the name of making money. You claim to be a conservative, yet you spent money like a liberal. Under your leadership, it took only six months to go from a balanced budget and surplus to a budget deficit.  It was also, under your watch, that the worst terrorist attack in our nation’s history occurred in which you had the actionable intelligence and blatantly ignored it.

Mr. Cheney, haven’t you done enough already? Can’t you just go away? The People of the United States voted to replace you and your extremist friends in an effort to walk, no run, away from the madness that you and George W. Bush perpetrated upon a nation and a world. The United States of America is the greatest country on Earth and we will overcome the atrocities you and George W. Bush committed in our names.

Please go away so the healing can begin. At this point in our nation’s history, we need your absence, not your presence. As a Christian, I forgive you but I cannot forget what you have done. I pray that you will see the light, hear the call, and seek to redeem yourself by finding ways of giving back and then some for what you have taken. Perhaps one way to start would be to give the families who lost loved ones in Iraq a lifetime of salary at a rate equal to what we were paying the contractors. It’ll never make it right, but it would be a start.
